Helaman 13:14-27 (4/29/18)

Scripture study participants:  Dad, Mom, Brandon, Kenyon, Shaylee, Jaron, Maycee & Elias
Hymn:
Prayer:  Brandon

Helaman 13:14-27

What we learned...
"It's not bad to be rich but if you put riches over the Lord then it is bad." (Brandon)

"Samuel says the Nephites are worse than the Lamanites because the prophet comes and declares the word of the Lord and talks about your sins and iniquities and ye say that he is a false prophet and try to destroy him." (Maycee & Mom)

"The Lord hadn't destroyed Zarahemla yet because there's still righteous people in Zarahemla." (Jaron)

"Samuel said that the only reason that Zarahemla hadn't been destroyed is because they're still righteous people in there." (Shaylee)

"The Nephites would only accept prophets that would tell them that they could do no wrong." (Kenyon)

"An unrighteous people will reject true prophets of God because they tell the people of their sins and admonishes them to repent, which they don't want to do. They will accept and lift those who preach to them to follow the natural man and do whatever they want to do. So don't expect to the prophet to be popular and accepted in a wicked world but expect him to be mocked, hated and persecuted instead." (Dad)

"Just like Nephi, Laman & Lemuel getting the brass plates, Samuel wasn't able to initially accomplish what the Lord commanded him to go back and preach repentance to the Nephites because they blocked him from entering the city. But instead of using that as an excuse to give up he found another way to accomplish the Lord's commands by climbing the wall of the city and speaking the Lord's words with a loud voice.

Helaman 11:2-9 (4/7/18)

"Nephi was hoping that the people would have a change of heart." (Jaron)

"Nephi called a famine down, and it was so bad that it brought people to repentance." (Kenyon)

"The people turned to Nephi after they were humbled by the famine but not necessarily were repentant but sorry for their circumstances." (Brandon)

"Nephi used the Lord's method of long-suffering in attempt to humble the wicked." (Elias)

"The famine was so severe that wars ceased in the land and the people, including the judges and leaders turned to Nephi to ask the Lord to end the famine. Also the reason that the wicked was impacted more by the famine is that the Lord has the prophets warn the people about hard times ahead and to prepare for them, including saving up food for a famine. He did this with Joseph when he was in Egypt, and the Lord does the same with prophets today. The righteous will always be more prepared for hard times than the wicked since it takes a lot of work and effort, and the righteous have the faith to believe and do the work to prepare whereas the wicked are typically lazy and avoid doing work, especially when they don't see it as necessary.
