1 Nephi 18:17-18  (Kenyon & Dad)

Q:   What did Laman, Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael do to those who stood up for Nephi? (Dad)
A:   "They threatened everyone who stood up for him." (Brandon)

Q:   What effect did it have on Lehi and Sariah? (Dad)
A:    "Not only were they already old but the grief made them more ill and almost dying." (Kenyon)

1 Nephi 18:19  (Brandon)

Q:   Who else was grieved because of the way they treated Nephi and those who sided with him? (Dad)
A:   "Jacob and Joseph because they were young and needed nourishment and their mother and father were grieving and sick so they didn't have time to take care of them." (Brandon)

1 Nephi 18:20  (Mom)

Q:   What was the only thing that would soften Laman and Lemuel's hearts? (Dad)
A:   "God threatening them with destruction. Then that's how they repent." (Shaylee)

1 Nephi 18:21  (Shaylee)

Q:   What made the Liahona start to work again? (Dad)
A:    "When Nephi was loosened he prayed to the Lord and everything was calm." (Shaylee)  "Yes, the storm didn't calm right after they loosened Nephi, but it was Nephi's prayer afterward that helped to calm it. But obviously they first had to loosen Nephi."  (Dad)

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1 Nephi 18:12  (Brandon)

Q:   After Laman and Lemuel bound Nephi with cords so he couldn't move what happened? (Dad)
A:   "The compass or Liahona stopped working." (Brandon)

Q:   Why did it stop working? (Dad)
A:   "The Lord disagreed with what Laman and Lemuel were doing and weren't going to help them to the promised land with them acting that way." (Brandon)  "Yes, it would only work when they were faithful and obedient to the Lord."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 18:13  (Mom)

Q:   What happened next? (Dad)
A:    "They had a big storm with big waves but they still wouldn't loosen him."  (Mom)

1 Nephi 18:14  (Maycee)

Q:   How many days had the bad storm been going? (Dad)
A:    "Four." (Maycee with help from Mom)

1 Nephi 18:15  (Dad)

Q:   Why did Laman and Lemuel finally untie Nephi? (Dad)
A:   "Because the ship was about to sink, and they knew that the Lord caused the storm because they tied up Nephi. So they untied him for their own selfish reasons to live." (Brandon)   "Yes, they were not sorry for what they did to Nephi and all the pain and suffering he endured for four days but only did it because they realized they were going to die if they didn't. It took them four days before they finally conceded that the storm was caused by the Lord for their disobedience. All the other time they were in denial and probably thought it was coincidence and would eventually end because they were hard hearted and unbelieving."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 18:16  (Jaron)

Q:   What did Nephi do after he was untied? (Dad)
A:    "Look unto my God and I did praise Him all the day long." (Jaron)

Q:   Did Nephi murmur while he was tied up? (Dad)
A:   "He did not." (Jaron)  "Yes, and he had good reason to murmur. He had done everything the Lord had told him to do and with a good attitude and was humble and grateful too despite the hardships and trials he endured. But despite all of that the Lord allowed him to be tied up with cords and tossed around on a ship for four days, which bruised and battered him and caused his wrists and ankles to swell. But he didn't get mad at God or say to Him 'Why me?!!!' and complain, which is what most people do when they go through afflictions, especially ones not caused by themselves. Nephi set an example that everyone should follow, which was the same example that the Lord set in how He handled his trials also."  (Dad)

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1 Nephi 17:53  (Dad)

Q:   Why did the Lord tell Nephi to reach out and touch Laman and Lemuel, and that He would shock them? (Dad)
A:   "So that they would believe that Nephi had the power of God." (Kenyon

1 Nephi 17:54-55  (Jaron & Kenyon)

Q:   How did Laman and Lemuel react when Nephi shocked them? (Dad)
A:   "They realized that he did have the power of God and was about to worship him." (Kenyon

Q:   What did Nephi tell Laman and Lemuel when they bowed down to worship him? (Dad)
A:    "He said 'Don't worship me but to worship God and honor thy parents.'" (Kenyon)  "."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 18:1  (Shaylee)

Q:   What did Laman and Lemuel do afterward? (Dad)
A:   "They followed what Nephi said and worshipped the Lord." (Shaylee)  "They started to help build the boat." (Kenyon)

1 Nephi 18:2  (Mom)

Q:   After what manner did Nephi build their ship? (Dad)
A:    "Of God."  (Mom)  "Yes, not after the manner of men. The Lord showed him a different way to build a ship. The Lord ways are not man's in many ways."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 18:3  (Maycee)

Q:   What did Nephi do to find out how to build the ship? (Dad)
A:   "He went into the mountain and prayer." (Kenyon

Q:   How often did he go into the mountain to learn how to build it? (Dad)
A:   "Oft." (Kenyon)  "Yeah, he didn't just go up once at the beginning and had to be shown and remember how to build every part of the ship at once. He sought the Lord's guidance often, and that's a good example for how we should seek the Lord's guidance in our lives - seek it often."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 18:4  (Brandon)

Q:   Why were Laman and Lemuel humbled after they finished building the ship? (Dad)
A:   "Because when they did it according to the word of the Lord it was of good workmanship." (Brandon)  "Yes, remember how at first they doubted that Nephi could build a ship? And now that they saw that he was able to do it and not after the manner that men typically build ships but a totally different way after the manner the Lord showed Nephi and that it turned out to be of such fine quality and workmanship that surpassed their expectations they knew that Nephi was truly being led and inspired of the Lord. This is what humbled them."  (Dad)

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1 Nephi 17:46-47  (Brandon & Jaron)

Q:   Why is Nephi's heart pained over Laman and Lemuel? What is Nephi afraid of? (Dad)
A:   "Because he was afraid that they would be cast off for eternity." (Brandon)

1 Nephi 17:48  (Mom)

Q:   How did Laman and Lemuel react to what Nephi told them? (Dad)
A:   "They wanted to throw him into the depths of the sea." (Brandon)

Q:   How would they throw him into the depths of the sea? Was the ship built yet? (Dad)
A:   "No. They were going to throw him after the ship was built?" (Kenyon)  "No, they wanted to throw him into the depths of the sea right then and there, but if they threw him into the ocean from a beach it wouldn't be that deep and Nephi could easily get back to the beach. So there was obviously someplace they could throw him into deep ocean waters that he could not get out of, which to do from the shore must have been a cliff. So there was probably a big cliff nearby next to the ocean where they could throw Nephi off of without a beach below for him to swim to."  (Dad)

Q:   Why didn't they throw Nephi into the depths of the sea? (Dad)
A:    "Because Nephi said that God would wither them as a dried reed if they touched him." (Shaylee)  "God filled him with power." (Brandon)

1 Nephi 17:49  (Dad)

Q:   What did Nephi tell Laman and Lemuel that they should do? (Dad)
A:   "That they should not murmur anymore." (Shaylee)   "He wants them to labor." (Kenyon)   "Help him build the ship." (Brandon)

1 Nephi 17:50-51  (Kenyon & Maycee)

Q:   How did Nephi answer Laman and Lemuel's criticism that he didn't know how to build a ship? (Dad)
A:   "He told them that the Lord can help him to do anything." (Kenyon)  "Yes, he said that if God can perform all manner of miracles that He could certainly teach him how to build a ship."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:52  (Shaylee)

Q:   Did Laman and Lemuel continue arguing against Nephi? (Dad)
A:   "No." (Shaylee)

Q:   Why? What wrought upon or came over them? (Dad)
A:    "The Spirit of God." (Shaylee)  "Yes, the Holy Ghost will confound people and bear witness of the truth to them and drive out the spirit of contention, which is the spirit of the devil."  (Dad)

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1 Nephi 17:40

Q:   Who does he say the Lord loveth? (Dad)
A:   "Their fathers...Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." (Kenyon)  "Those who will have him to be their God." (Shaylee)  "Yes, you're both right."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:41

Q:   Why did the Lord send forth the fiery serpents among the Israelites in the wilderness? (Dad)
A:   "To see if they would listen to God and follow His way to be healed." (Shaylee)  "Yes, but He first sent them because of their iniquities. And the way He made it so they could be healed was simple and to give a type to help them understand and prepare for Jesus."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:43

Q:   Why did it take 40 years for the Israelites? (Dad)
A:   "Because they hardened their hearts against the Lord." (Shaylee)  "And they reviled or rebelled against Moses too, which is not surprising since the prophet is the voice of the Lord on earth. So when people reject one they reject the other. You cannot reject the Lord's prophet without also rejecting the Lord."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:43

"So Nephi showed how the Israelites weren't as righteous as Laman and Lemuel claimed and had become more wicked after they inhabited the promised land." (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:44-45

Q:   What did Nephi say to Laman and Lemuel? (Dad)
A:    "They are murderers in their hearts and are acting like the Jews." (Shaylee)

Q:   What else did Nephi say to them? (Dad)
A:    "They saw an angel and still been acting wicked." (Shaylee)  "OUCH!!! Yes, he said that they were swift to do iniquity and slow to remember the Lord. And he not only showed how the Jews in Jerusalem were wicked but also pointed out how they were too."  (Dad)

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1 Nephi 17:29

Q:   How did the Israelites get water to drink when they were in the wilderness? (Dad)
A:   "They smote a rock." (Brandon)

Q:   Who smote the rock?  (Dad)
A:   "Moses." (Shaylee)

Q:   Could any of them just smite the rock and get water?  (Dad)
A:   "No." (Brandon)  "Correct. It was done through Moses because he held the Melchizedek Priesthood, was righteous and had the faith necessary to do it, which the rest of the Israelites didn't."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:30

Q:   What did the Israelites do after the Lord delivered them out of Egypt? (Dad)
A:   "They hardened their hearts and rebelled against Moses and the Lord." (Shaylee)

1 Nephi 17:31

Q:   All things were done for the Israelites through whom? (Dad)
A:   "Moses." (Shaylee)  "That's right. Moses was the prophet and had the priesthood and power of God and used it to deliver them out of Egypt, destroy their enemies, and provide water for them. It was through Moses that the Lord blessed the Israelites. We know that they were not righteous enough to receive the fulness of the gospel and the Melchizedek priesthood since they worshiped the golden calf after being delivered from Egypt. That's why they were given the law of Moses, which is a lesser law, because they weren't ready and willing to live the higher law of the gospel. So to counter Laman and Lemuel's argument that the Israelites were so righteous because they were led out of Egypt to Jerusalem Nephi reminds them that it was really due to the righteousness of Moses not the Israelites as a whole that they were delivered. They were blessed with deliverance because they chose to follow the prophet Moses, but when you're in slavery being treated so horribly that is not really that tough of a decision to make. What was more telling about the spiritual state of the Israelites was how they behaved once the Lord delivered them, and they complained a lot, struggled keeping even the lesser law, and worshipped idols so they weren't as righteous as Laman and Lemuel were making them out to be."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:33

Q:   So were the people inhabiting the promised land before the Israelites righteous? (Dad)
A:   "No, they weren't."  (Elder Rodriguez)

1 Nephi 17:34

Q:   If the people in the promised land were righteous would the Lord have favored the Israelites and allowed them to kick them out? (Dad)
A:   "No." (Shaylee)  "Correct. Because those in the promised land were wicked that He allowed the Israelites to scatter them and inhabit it. If they had been righteous the Lord would have allowed them to remain. We see in the Book of Mormon how the righteous will share their land with others who are righteous like when the Nephites provided land and protection to the Lamanites who converted to the gospel, the people of Ammon."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:35

Q:   Does God have favorites among His children? (Dad)
A:    "No." (Kenyon "Yes, He loves all of His children even the wicked, but it says that He favors the righteous. This means that He blesses them more not because He doesn't love the wicked but because blessings are given based on our obedience to His commandments. So the more obedient or righteous we are the more He blesses or favors us. If the wicked repent and start obeying His commandments He will bless and favor them too."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:36

Q:   Why did the Lord create the earth? (Dad)
A:    "To be inhabited by His children, which is us. That's the whole purpose of the earth is to provide us a place to live in our days of probation. There are many misguided people who think that there are too many people on the earth and want to decrease the number of people for the animals and earth's sake but that's contrary to the Lord's purposes."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:37

Q:   What nation does the Lord raise up or support? (Dad)
A:   "A righteous nation." (Shaylee)

1 Nephi 17:38

Q:   What does the Lord save for the righteous? (Dad)
A:   "Precious lands. A lot of people around the earth are arguing or fighting over land because they say it belongs to them, including in our own country. But who does it say the land belongs to?"  (Dad)  "The Lord." (Shaylee)  "Exactly. The Lord created the earth, and the land is His to give. He allows all people to live on earth but He gives the righteous chosen lands that are precious. However, if they turn wicked the land becomes cursed to them, and they can lose it to a more righteous people. They can also lose the land to another wicked nation who is stronger since they lost the protective blessings of the Lord."  (Dad)

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1 Nephi 17:22
Q:   So what lie did Laman, Lemuel and Ishmael's family tell to justify rebelling against Lehi and Nephi? (Dad)
A:   "They said that the people in Jerusalem were righteous." (Shaylee)  "Yes, but righteous people heed the words of prophets not persecute them like they did Lehi and Jeremiah."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:23
Q:   What was an example they used to say the people in Jerusalem were righteous? (Dad)
A:    "Their fathers were led away by the Lord out of Egypt." (Shaylee)

Q:   Why is this not an example of the people in Jerusalem being righteous? (Dad)
A:    "They're not connected to the example because they're not the people in Jerusalem." (Shaylee)  "That's right. The Israelites that the Lord led out of Egypt were not alive when they lived in Jerusalem. So you can't claim the righteousness of your ancestors. Everyone is judged by their own works. Plus that's a bad example because they had to wander in the wilderness for 40 years after fleeing Egypt before the Lord brought them to the land of their inheritance because they were a hard-hearted, murmuring people."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:24

Q:   Nephi didn't give credit to the Israelites for being led out of Egypt. Instead who did he give the credit to? (Dad)
A:   "The Lord." (Kenyon)  "Moses." (Shaylee)  "Yes, both. He said the Lord commanded Moses to lead them out of bondage."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 17:27

Q:   What happened to the Egyptians who were chasing the Israelites as they fled out of Egypt? (Dad)
A:   "They drowned in the Red Sea." (Jaron)

1 Nephi 17:28

Q:   What did the Israelites eat when they were in the wilderness? (Dad)
A:   "Manna or bread." (Shaylee)

Q:   How did they get it? (Dad)
A:   "From the Lord. Every day but Sunday they would wake up in the morning and collect what they needed for that day, except for Saturday they would collect for Sunday also." (Kenyon)
