Q: What do we learn about these people from what the Lord says in these verses? (Dad)A: "That they might hear what the Lord says but they don't do what the Lord says." (Brandon) "Yes, they are hard hearted and unbelieving just like Laman and Lemuel." (Dad)
Q: How long have they been this way? What does it mean from the womb? (Dad)
A: "Since they were born, their whole lives." (Brandon) "Yes, Laman and Lemuel and those of the House of Israel who are like them the Lord says that they've been this way since they were born. We know that's because we were spirits before we were born, and we have the same spirit here on earth that we did in the premortal life. Likewise the Book of Mormon teaches that the same spirit we have at the end of our life will be the same one that we take into the spirit world. So if we are a happy, faithful disciple of Christ when we die we will continue to be in the next life. Likewise those who are hard hearted and are unbelieving like Laman and Lemuel will be the same when they die unless they repent and have a mighty change of heart. They will not magically change to be believing and righteous just because they see that there is life after death and what the prophets taught turns out to be true. Only the Holy Ghost can change one's heart and cause them to believe and desire righteousness and that change is a gift from God to those who have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of their sins and strive to follow the Lord and keep His commandments. Just because someone was not valiant in the premortal life doesn't mean they cannot change in this life. But it is easier for those who already have that disposition in their spirit because they were that way before they were born. Either way it doesn't matter as much what kind of spirit we had when we were born as it does when we die. Someone who was not valiant who changed and became valiant in this life before they died will be better off in the eternities than someone who was valiant in the premortal life but chose not to be in this life. So the good news is that this life is a clean slate for all of us, and we all have the opportunity for the blessings of eternal life if we will believe in and follow the Lord." (Dad)
