QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1 Nephi 3:5

Q:  Why did Laman and Lemuel murmur against Lehi about going back to Jerusalem? (Dad)
A:   "Because they said it's hard and they probably don't want to go back and forth. They want to stay where they are and be lazy butts." (Shaylee)

Q:  Who commanded that they go back to Jerusalem? (Dad)
A:  "The Lord did. You'd think they'd give the Lord some respect after giving them life." (Brandon)  "It's easy to point out and see how Laman and Lemuel murmured, but we recognize when we do the same?"  (Dad)

1 Nephi 3:6

Q:  Why did Lehi tell Nephi that he would be favored of the Lord? (Dad)
A:  "Because he did not murmur like his older brothers." (Brandon)

Q:  Does the Lord love those he favors more than those he doesn't? (Dad)
A:  "No, he loves everyone of His children the same but He doesn't love their choices. You don't hate a person just bad actions." (Brandon) "The lesson here is that it's not enough to just be obedient. The Lord cares about our heart and attitude, whether we obey gladly or grudgingly. And those who obey with a good attitude will be favored or get more blessings than those who complain."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 3:7

Q:  Why do you think that Nephi had a good attitude about going back to Jerusalem and getting the plates when it was a hard thing to do? (Dad)
A:  "Cause he knew as it says in the scripture that the Lord would provide a way because he doesn't give impossible commandments."  (Kenyon)  "Yes, and how do you think we as parents feel toward you children when we ask you to do chores or something you don't want to do and you guys complain but one of you has a good attitude and does it with a good attitude? It makes us very happy like Lehi, and it also makes Heavenly Father happy when we obey Him with a good attitude, and He bless us more for it."  (Dad)

1 Nephi 3:8

Q:  Why was Lehi exceedingly glad? (Dad)
A:  "He knew that Nephi was very blessed to do things the Lord commands and for following in his father's footsteps." (Shaylee)

1 Nephi 3:11

Q:  What does it meant to cast lots? (Dad)
A:  "Isn't a random picking game where you get different size straws and whoever gets or largest gets to go?" (Brandon)

Q:  Do you think that's how they should have decided who went, and if not, how should they have? (Dad)
A:  "A different way." (Shaylee) "Choose the best negotiating." (Brandon)

Q:  "A good leader would have done what?"  (Dad)
A:  "He would have done it himself." (Brandon)  "I agree. Instead of passing the buck of trying to get someone else to do it or choose randomly a leader would step up and volunteer, which I would expect someone like Nephi to do. Maybe he didn't because his brothers were older and didn't want them to think he was trying to take charge and be the boss. But obviously they didn't want to do it or else they wouldn't have resorted to casting lots. So Nephi was probably uncertain or thought that his older brothers would be better negotiators since they were both worldly men like Laman. But the lesson for us to learn is to step up and volunteer to do the things we know the Lord wants us to do instead of waiting to be asked or assigned to do it."  (Dad)
